Benefits Of Mentoring
Benefits For Youth
Depending upon the goals of the program, participation in a mentoring program
can produce a variety of positive outcomes in our youth.
Besides the obvious outcomes for an academic mentoring program (improved grades, higher self-esteem) or a career mentoring program (developing a post-high school plan of action, goal setting skills), youth mentoring may also produce youth who:
- Are less likely to experiment with drugs and alcohol
- Are less likely to skip school
- Are less likely to become involved in violence
- Have better attitudes about school, family, and relationships
- Experience improvement in self-esteem and self-confidence
Benefits For Mentors
In addition to providing youth with some very positive outcomes, mentoring benefits the mentor as well. Adults who mentor
youth say that they:
- Experience greater self-esteem
- Can relate better to their own children and other youth
- Feel a real sense of accomplishment
- Have learned something from their experience
